[SMM survey] Weekly Review of Electrolyzer Industry (2025-06-30 to 07-04)

Capacity side, the domestic alkaline electrolyzer market maintained 35.77GW this week, with no new capacity added.

Delivery side, mid-week, the first self-developed "Integrated CO2 Electrolysis Conversion System" produced by CSSC (Handan) Peric Hydrogen Energy Technology Co., Ltd. (Peric Hydrogen), a subsidiary of the 718 Research Institute of CSSC, was successfully delivered to the client. In recent weeks, Shanghai Hydrogen Era Technology Co., Ltd. delivered four 1050Nm³/h units to the China Energy Construction Songyuan Hydrogen Energy Industrial Park project, while Zhongji Zhongdian (Yangzhou) Hydrogen Production Equipment Co., Ltd. successfully delivered a 1000Nm³/h alkaline water electrolysis hydrogen production system, including a 1000Nm³/h electrolyzer, separation skid, purification skid, and supporting equipment such as water-alkali tanks. The delivery destination for the latter remains unconfirmed.

As of June 30, 2025, domestic companies (including overseas deliveries) delivered a total of 45MW of alkaline electrolyzers in Q2 (all data sourced from public information).

Electrolyzer orders side, three electrolyzer-related projects emerged this week:

Hongyang New Energy Development Group Jilin Co., Ltd. announced the Altay Fuhai County PV+ESS Hydrogen-Ammonia-Methanol Integrated Project, which includes a new 36,000 mt/year green hydrogen system featuring a 50,000Nm³/h water electrolysis hydrogen production system with related auxiliary systems and 72 sets of 1000Nm³/h alkaline electrolyzers.

The Shanxi Provincial Investment Project Online Approval and Supervision Platform showed that the project for annual production of 50 sets of low-cost megawatt-level anion exchange membrane water electrolysis hydrogen production equipment passed preliminary filing review, with Lvliang Lanqi Energy Development Co., Ltd. as the construction entity.

Inner Mongolia Huadian Damaoqi Wind and Solar Power Hydrogen Production Integrated Project received approval, planning to construct 126 sets of 1000Nm³/h water electrolysis hydrogen production devices and supporting equipment, with an annual hydrogen production capacity of 547 million Nm³. It will configure 25 2000-cubic-meter hydrogen spherical tanks with a storage capacity of 650,000 Nm³, alongside supporting facilities including a 220kV hydrogen production main step-down station.

According to Hubei Government Service Network, the Three Gorges Hydrogen Valley Zhijiang Hydrogen Port Complex Project (2506-420583-04-01-276936) filed on June 28 showed a status of "cancelled."

The Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Investment Project Online Approval Office announced the withdrawal of the world’s first 100-million-mt liquid sunshine green methanol production project.

 

Policy Dynamics

  1. The European Commission released the "Clean Industrial Agreement State Aid Framework," which explicitly requires member states to prioritize support for "renewable fuels of non-biological origin" (RFNBOs) and ensures public resources tilt toward low-carbon technologies through detailed rules on fund allocation ratios and project timelines.
  2. The European Commission has approved a €4 billion special fund for electrolyzers, offering a 30% subsidy on equipment costs for projects with a capacity of ≥500MW/year, and setting an efficiency target of ≥60% (LHV basis) for electrolyzers in green hydrogen projects by 2030.
  3. The National Energy Administration of China has issued the "Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards for Alkaline Electrolyzers," mandating that newly built projects must have a hydrogen production energy consumption per unit of ≤4.3kWh/Nm³, and off-grid hydrogen production projects are eligible for a 0.15 yuan/kWh discount on electricity prices.

Corporate News

  1. Hongji Chuangneng Technology (Guangzhou) Co., Ltd. has submitted an application for listing on the main board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
  2. Recently, Qichacha news revealed that Guangzhou Hengyun Hydrogen Energy Technology Co., Ltd. has been established, with a business scope including the sale of complete new energy vehicles, research and development of emerging energy technologies, battery manufacturing, etc.
  3. Shandong Hydrogen Boat Green Energy Technology Development Co., Ltd. has grandly announced the official market launch of China's first pressurized and visualizable electrolyzer.
  4. Recently, Hubei Chudao Hydrogen Energy Technology Industry Development Co., Ltd. has been established with a registered capital of 100 million yuan. Its business scope includes: research and development of emerging energy technologies; automobile sales; sales of complete new energy vehicles; sales of battery swapping facilities for new energy vehicles, etc.
  5. Cockerill Hydrogen has recently completed a new round of financing, raising €116 million, which almost covers all the funds needed for the business development of Cockerill Hydrogen.

Patent Applications

  1. The Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (China) has disclosed patent CN2025110028, which involves the research and development of a ceramic-based anion exchange membrane with a laboratory-tested lifespan of up to 80,000 hours.
  2. Johnson Matthey (UK) has submitted patent WO2025109876, disclosing a Fe-Ni-Mo ternary non-precious metal catalyst formulation with activity close to that of platinum-based materials.

Technological Advancements

  1. A research team led by Professor Jianwu Sun at Linköping University in Sweden has recently announced that through innovative design of a cubic silicon carbide (3C-SiC)/cobalt oxide (Co₃O₄)/nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH)₂) three-layer composite material, they have successfully increased the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen production by 800%, setting a new performance record for similar materials.
  2. The first set of off-grid medium-voltage DC 20kV direct-connected hydrogen production power supply (also known as "Hydrogen Element 1") independently developed and manufactured by Tongda Electromagnetic Energy Co., Ltd. has been successfully applied in China.
  3. Nel Hydrogen (Norway) has released the new-generation PEM electrolyzer HySyner500, which increases the current density to 5A/cm² and reduces the material cost per unit of capacity by 22%.
